Cami Vell: a journey of tradition and evolution

Nestled along the ancient path connecting Xativa to Alzira, a gastronomic gem awaits those seeking an exceptional dining experience. Welcome to Cami Vell, a renowned restaurant steeped in history and culinary mastery.

THE HISTORY OF CAMI VELL

In 1984, Antonio López, a professional hotelier, opened the doors of Cami Vell, located on the old road once called “Camí vell de Xàtiva”, the one that stretches from Xativa to Alzira. This historical route inspired the name of this iconic establishment.

Originally starting as a sandwich shop, Cami Vell gradually transformed into a culinary gem, where traditional cuisine and high-quality products took center stage. For the past 34 years, the restaurant has been a reference point for locals and visitors alike seeking an authentic gastronomic experience.

The passion for cooking runs deep in the family. Toni and Iván, the sons of Antonio, began assisting at Tasca Cami Vell from a young age, developing a keen interest in the culinary arts. Inspired by their father’s teachings, both decided to pursue formal culinary studies. After completing their education, they honed their skills at renowned restaurants such as Café de París in Málaga, El Ángel Azul in Valencia, Ca Sento in Valencia, Las Rejas Ciudad Real, and Es Molí de Foc in Menorca, among others.

With valuable experience under their belts, the two brothers returned to Alzira to continue their culinary journey at Cami Vell. Their involvement marked a change in vision, leading to a renovation that transformed Cami Vell into what it is today: a place where patrons feel at home, surrounded by typical Valencian decor, adorned with hand-painted ceramics and traditional motifs. The restaurant also boasts an open kitchen concept, allowing customers to witness the artistry behind each dish.

Presently, Cami Vell proudly holds the Bib Gourmand distinction from the prestigious Michelin Guide, and it has been selected by the Guía Repsol as the best restaurant for Celiacs in Spain. Over the years, the restaurant has garnered numerous accolades, including the gold insignia of the city of Alzira.

THE DELICIOUS MENUS

Cami Vell embraces a contemporary perspective on traditional dishes, blending the past with the present. They stay attuned to the latest trends and popular ingredients while never letting go of their culinary roots. Each dish has a touch of tradition, whether it be in the choice of ingredients or the preparation techniques.

Their culinary approach offers customers a taste of time-honored flavors adapted to the modern context. A prime example is the “arroz de nabo y judías” (turnip and beans rice), which historically used to be a substantial dish, serving half a kilo of rice for the needed energy and calories. Today, the dish is served in 3 or 4 spoonfuls, allowing guests to savor a variety of dishes.

THE STAR DISH

The star of Cami Vell’s menu is undoubtedly their rice dishes, with a particular highlight being the “arroz de Gamba Blanca” (white shrimp rice) sourced from the “Lonja de Cullera”. Cooked in a traditional “perol”, an iron pot once used for stews and rice dishes in the Albufera region, these rice preparations are a delightful representation of authentic Valencian cuisine.

GIFTING EXPERIENCES

Additionally, Cami Vell offers delightful tasting menus that make for perfect gifts. Since introducing these gift menus in 2018, they have become a tremendous success. In an age when people often struggle to find meaningful presents, gifting experiences has become a trend, and Cami Vell’s tasting menus have captured the hearts of gift-givers. The restaurant offers three tasting menus and a gift card option, providing a memorable experience for fortunate recipients.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

Cami Vell goes beyond serving exceptional meals; they also cater to special events and celebrations. Whether it’s a corporate event, wedding, communion, baptism, or birthday, Cami Vell will tailor their services to meet your needs, making the day truly unforgettable.

They offer catering services for private parties and events and also provide cooking courses for both individuals and companies. If you are considering opening your own restaurant or require gastronomic consultation, they now offer gastronomic advisory services.

Cami Vell is not merely a restaurant; it is a symbol of culinary heritage and innovation. With a rich history and a dedication to preserving tradition while embracing change, this family-owned gem has rightfully earned its place as a top-notch dining destination, satisfying the palates and hearts of its clients, both local and international. As they continue to evolve and delight, Cami Vell remains a beacon of Valencian gastronomy, inviting diners to partake in a culinary journey like no other.
